Besides going to a doctor or getting one? What did they try? Anything unusual but common?

I asked my 86-year-old mother, who grew up in Oklahoma during that time period. She says that back then, doctors would drive out to your house if someone was sick. In other words, it was actually better in terms of personal care than it is today! Of course, medicine has improved - she adds that her mother used castor oil for most every ailment. I suspect that some families relied on folk medicine and herbal remedies, but I don't have first-hand knowledge of that.
