I really would like to start writing poetry.

What are some subjects I can write about?

Start at the bottom of your list. Here's my suggested reading list.

The ancient Greeks: Homer; Sappho; Aesop (not a poet, but a genius of the metaphor).

Then try some French from Voltaire and Victor Hugo.

The great English poets next: Rudyard Kipling and George Bernard Shaw, for example.

Then finish with Walt Whitman, ee cummings and Emily Dickinson.
